Is Certificate IV enough to get a builder’s license in Australia?

Certificate IV in Building and Construction is the minimum educational requirement to apply for a builder’s license in most Australian states and territories.

This qualification covers the core competencies needed to meet licensing criteria, including construction planning, legal requirements, and safety regulations. However, obtaining a builder’s licence also requires industry experience, usually 2–4 years, depending on your state.

Key requirements include:

  • Completing CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building stream).
  • Meeting work experience thresholds (e.g. as a carpenter or tradesperson).
  • Submitting an application to your state’s licensing authority (e.g. QBCC in Queensland or NSW Fair Trading).
  • In some states, additional training or business knowledge may be required.

By State: builder’s license

State Is Cert IV enough? What it allows
NSW ⚠️ Sometimes Restricted builder licence (limited scope & value)
VIC ❌ Generally no Diploma usually required
QLD ❌ No Diploma required for QBCC builder licence
WA ❌ No Diploma + experience required
SA ❌ No Diploma required
TAS / NT / ACT ❌ No Diploma typically required

While Certificate IV is essential, it must be combined with practical experience. To understand what applies in your case, it’s best to book a consultation with a qualified advisor.
