By studying a Bachelor or Masters of Teaching, students will gain the skills and expertise to thrive in a rewarding career as a teacher. Upon graduation students will be prepared to teach in classrooms in Australian and across the world.

This program prepares students to teach in early childhood, primary or secondary settings. Students undertake a foundation first year and then undertake studies in either primary or secondary education. Throughout their studies, students would be required to do practice placements in an Australian Primary or Secondary School. During this time students would observation and participation in school and practice teaching.

This course can be studied at a Bachelor or Masters level. The Masters course is delivered in as quick as 18 months at certain universities around Australia.  The Bachelor of Education  The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is nominated by the Department of Home Affairs as the relevant assessing authority for the occupation of teachers. According to the Skilled Migration Assessment Policy Guidelines, obtaining accredited course completion allows you to obtain a full skills assessment without requiring additional work experience. This is done through the accredited pathway program.

Why is this important? Because Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher and Secondary School Teacher is listed on the Medium to Long Term Skilled Shortage List (MLTSSL)

Therefore because the occupation is on the MLTSSL, and you can obtain a skills assessment through the accredited pathway when you finish the course, and then potentially apply for general skilled migration visas such as:

Bachelor of Education Common Course Requirements

  • Must have graduated year 12 in home country
  • Must have a minimum of IELTS 7 – 7.5 in all 4 components

Masters of Education Common Course Requirements

  • Must have graduated from a Bachelor Degree
  • Must have a minimum of IELTS 7 – 8 in all 4 components

Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher (241111) and Secondary School Teacher (241411) – Is currently on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List To pass the skills assessment for general skilled migration you are required to prove that you have:

  • Bachelor or Masters of Education from an accredited Australian provider

Additionally, If you complete a Bachelor or Masters of Education in Australia you may qualify for the Temporary Graduate Visa. The benefit of this visa is, it gives you 2 years of unlimited work rights in Australia. Which can give you invaluable experience in the education Industry.

The number of Secondary School Teachers stayed fairly stable over the past 5 years and is expected to grow moderately over the next 5 years:
from 133,200 in 2017 to 139,000 by 2022.
There are likely to be around 64,000 job openings over this time from workers leaving and new jobs being created.

  • Demand: This is a very large occupation.
  • Unemployment: Unemployment was below average in 2017.
  • Location: Secondary School Teachers work in most regions of Australia.
  • Industries: Most work in the Education and Training industry.
  • Earnings: Full-time workers earn around $1,500 per week (higher than the all jobs average of $1,230). Earnings tend to be lower when starting out and higher as experience grows.
  • Full-time: Many work full-time (77.6%, higher than the all jobs average of 68.4%).
  • Hours: Full-time workers spend around 41.5 hours per week at work (compared to the all jobs average of 40.0 hours).

Temporary Graduate Visa

If undertaking study in Australia for a minimum of 2 years you may qualify for the Temporary Skilled Graduate Visa. This visa allows the holder 2 years unlimited work rights in Australia.

Many graduates use this time to build up experience in their field or find an employer that is willing to sponsor their visa.

Even though graduates may qualify for a full skills assessment after graduation of the bachelor degree, graduates may also choose to first obtain the temporary graduate visa. This will give them sufficient time to process any future general skilled migration application. Once the student receives a positive skills assessment they may be eligible to apply for permanent work visas such as State Sponsored and General Skilled Migration Visas.
