Diploma
Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a vocational qualification for educators who want to move into curriculum design, compliance and leadership responsibilities in early childhood settings. It sits above Certificate III and is generally studied after it, rather than instead of it.
This diploma builds on the practical caregiving skills covered in Certificate III by adding curriculum design, leadership and compliance knowledge. Graduates learn to plan and implement an approved learning framework, apply the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Law and National Quality Standard, and may take on responsibility for supervising other educators or volunteers.
The course focuses on supporting children’s holistic development from birth to five years, within an inclusive and safe learning environment.
How It Builds on Certificate III
Certificate III gives you the foundational skills to provide direct care and support to children under supervision. The Diploma extends this into program design and service-level responsibilities.
For example, planning curriculum against an approved learning framework, contributing to policy and compliance, and mentoring less experienced staff. Certificate III is a standard entry requirement for the Diploma, so the two qualifications are best understood as sequential steps rather than alternatives.

By completion, students can generally:
- Design and implement curriculum in line with an approved early childhood learning framework
- Apply the requirements of the National Law, National Regulations and National Quality Standard
- Support children’s wellbeing, learning and development through documentation and individual planning
- Foster inclusive practice and positive relationships with children, families and colleagues
- Take on supervisory responsibility for other educators or volunteers, where applicable
A recent regulatory update worth noting: All individuals working or volunteering in a regulated education and care service in Australia are now required to complete mandatory National Child Safety Training (Foundation and, in some roles, Advanced level). This sits separately from the Diploma’s own units of competency, so it’s a requirement to plan for alongside study, not something the qualification itself provides.
Career and Further Study Pathways
A Diploma may support progression into roles such as room leader, educational leader or diploma-qualified educator, and (with relevant experience over time) potentially into centre coordination or director-level positions.
These leadership roles generally involve additional experience and, in some states, further regulatory approval, so the Diploma on its own does not guarantee a management position.
Graduates who want to continue toward teaching may also consider a pathway into a Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching. Some universities offer credit or recognition of prior learning for Diploma graduates, which can reduce the length of the degree — but this is assessed by each university individually and isn’t automatic, so it’s worth confirming directly with your chosen institution.

Many graduates use this time to build up experience in their field or find an employer that is willing to sponsor their visa.
If you have applied for the Temporary Graduate Visa you may also be eligible to apply for the Job Ready Program. The Job Ready Program is run through TRA and allows graduates in certain disciplines to have their skills assessed for skilled migration purposes.
