The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education is a one-year, postgraduate-level (AQF Level 8) course for people who already hold a bachelor’s degree in any field and want to move into early childhood teaching.
It’s generally the fastest teacher-qualifying pathway available to degree holders, and it suits career changers as much as people already working in the sector. Course titles vary slightly between providers (some call it a “Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood)” or “Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching”), so always check the exact accredited title with your chosen institution.
Who This Course Suits
Most providers accept you into the Graduate Diploma through one of two pathways:
| Entry pathway | Typical requirement |
| Career changer | A completed bachelor’s degree in any discipline (no prior early childhood background needed) |
| Existing educator | A Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (AQF5 or above) plus around five years’ relevant work experience with leadership responsibilities |
This makes the course equally suitable for someone with, say, a business or arts degree who wants to retrain, and for a diploma-qualified educator who wants to move from “educator” to registered “teacher” status.
Duration, Fees, Placement and English Requirements
⚠ Figures below are illustrative, drawn from currently published 2026 provider pages. Fees, intakes and English thresholds change yearly and by provider. Confirm directly with the institution before applying.
| Detail | Typical range |
| Duration | Around 12 months full-time; part-time study can extend this to roughly 24 months |
| Tuition (international) | Roughly $26,000–$37,500 per year, depending on provider |
| Placement | Around 60 days (480 hours) of supervised placement, generally split across a birth-to-three setting and a three-to-five setting |
| English requirement | Set individually by each provider. Commonly IELTS Academic overall 6.5 to 7.0, with a minimum per-band score specified separately |
| Intakes | Most commonly February and July (Semester 1/2), with some providers offering an additional mid-year term intake |
| Locations | Offered at various campuses including Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, though not every provider runs every intake at every campus |
| AQF level | Level 8 (postgraduate) |
Accreditation and Teacher Registration
Most Graduate Diploma programs in this field are accredited under the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) framework, which generally allows graduates to be recognised as an early childhood teacher for children from birth to five.
That said, course completion alone doesn’t guarantee registration. Teacher registration is administered separately by each state or territory’s own regulatory authority, and requirements differ by jurisdiction, particularly for anyone planning to register outside the state where they studied, or overseas.
Some providers also flag that the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) sets its own English language standard for registration purposes, which can be higher than the English score needed simply to enrol in the course. It’s worth confirming registration requirements with the relevant state authority before choosing a provider.
Completing this course also doesn’t, by itself, confer eligibility for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) or permanent residency. Visa eligibility depends on separate, current Department of Home Affairs criteria, and should be discussed with a registered migration agent as part of your planning.
How it Differs from the Bachelor and Vocational Diploma
| Vocational Diploma in ECEC | Graduate Diploma (this course) | Bachelor of Early Childhood Education | |
| Entry requirement | None specific (school leaver level) | A bachelor’s degree in any field, or Diploma + experience | None specific (school leaver level) |
| Typical duration | 1–2 years | ~1 year | 3–4 years |
| Outcome | Qualifies you as an early childhood educator, working under a qualified teacher | Qualifies you as an early childhood teacher | Qualifies you as an early childhood teacher |
| Best suited to | Those starting out or without a degree | Degree holders wanting the fastest route to teacher status | School leavers with no prior degree |
