Can you become an electrician without an apprenticeship in Australia?

Yes, you can become an electrician in Australia without an apprenticeship. Unfortunately, according to Jobs and Skills Australia, international students are not eligible for an apprenticeship because there is no visa suitable for international apprentices.

There are other pathways for foreigners or international students to become an electrician. They can take the non-apprenticeship pathway offered at education providers such as TAFE. However, there are certain requirements to be met.

The requirements include:

  • You must be at least 21 years of age
  • You must have at least 2 years work experience in the field
  • You must be currently employed in the relevant field
