What’s the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 electrician?
Level 2 electricians are authorised to work on service lines and power supply networks, while Level 3 typically refers to full licensure as an electrician. Each level represents different responsibilities and training.
In Australia, a Level 2 electrician is qualified to work on live power supply systems—such as disconnecting or reconnecting power from the network. These electricians undergo specific training and are accredited by local authorities.
A Level 3 qualification generally refers to completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, which allows you to apply for a full electrician license. It covers core competencies like:
- Installing and maintaining electrical systems
- Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams
- Understanding electrical safety and regulations
While “Level 3” is often used in education, “Level 2” relates more to job function and accreditation. Both roles are essential in the electrical trade but serve different purposes.
