What visa do I need to study in Australia?

Published: Sep 3, 2025
You need the Student visa subclass 500 to study full-time in a CRICOS-registered course in Australia. For school-age students, the same subclass applies. A Student Guardian visa subclass 590 supports eligible guardians of under 18 students. Visitor visas allow short study of up to three months. It allows you to study short and long-term courses in the country, allowing you to obtain an internationally recognised Australian Qualification.
Subclass 500 holders can work limited hours during study periods and full-time during scheduled breaks. You must hold Overseas Student Health Cover for the visa length and meet the Genuine Student requirement, English, and financial capacity.
After graduation, many students consider the Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 for post-study work. For an overview of requirements, see this guide to the Student visa in Australia.
