What is the minimum wage in Australia?

Published: Dec 31, 2025

The national minimum wage in Australia is 23.23 dollars per hour from 1 July 2025, set by the Fair Work Commission. Full time minimum weekly pay is 882.40 for 38 hours. Many awards, including beauty and retail, prescribe higher classified rates, plus penalties, overtime, and allowances.

Beauty therapists often receive award rates under the Beauty Industry Award. Weekend, public holiday, and late night work can attract penalty rates. Employers must pay the higher of the award rate or the minimum wage. Always check Fair Work Ombudsman updates each July.

  • Minimum wages are reviewed annually by the Fair Work Commission.

  • Most employees are covered under industry awards that often pay above the minimum wage.

  • Penalty rates apply for weekend, public holiday, and overtime work.
