Is a diploma the equivalent of a degree?

Published: Dec 18, 2025

No. In the Australian Qualifications Framework, a diploma is Level 5 and an advanced diploma is Level 6. A bachelor degree is Level 7. Diplomas are shorter, skills-focused VET qualifications, while degrees provide deeper academic knowledge and broader career and migration options.

A diploma (undergraduate) is not equivalent to a degree (bachelor’s). They differ in academic level, length, and depth.

Diplomas suit practical, job-ready training in areas like trades, hospitality, or community services. Bachelor degrees are typically required for professions that need registration or accreditation, such as engineering, nursing, or teaching. Employers and assessing bodies recognise the distinctions in level and scope.

International students can study VET diplomas or degrees on a Student visa subclass 500. For post-study work rights, only specific degrees qualify for the 485 visa. Temporary Graduate visa 485 overview and eligibility.’
