Is a diploma counted as a degree?

Published: Dec 18, 2025

No. A diploma is not counted as a degree in Australia. It is a VET qualification at AQF Level 5, while a bachelor degree is AQF Level 7. Employers, universities, and migration authorities treat them differently for entry, recognition, and assessment.

Diplomas are valued for hands-on skills and quick entry to work. Degrees are used for professional registration and many skilled roles. If you plan to pursue postgraduate study or post-study work rights, a degree is usually required.

For advice on stepping from a diploma to a bachelor through credit, explore articulation pathways. Find diploma-to-degree pathways at Australian providers.
