Do I have to pay tax on the income I earn in Australia?

Published: Feb 19, 2021

Yes, if you’re working and earning wages in Australia, you’ll pay income tax. From 1 July 2026, the lowest marginal tax rate (on income between $18,201 and $45,000) dropped from 16% to 15%, so most international students pay a modest average tax rate depending on how much they earn.

The good news is that many international students are due a refund at tax time. Check current rates on the ATO website.
