A Bachelor of Psychological Science is a three-year undergraduate degree in Australia that provides a focused, scientific foundation in the study of human behavior, thought, and emotion. This degree is typically accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and serves as the essential first step for students aspiring to become a registered psychologist. However, the skills learned are highly transferable, leading to a variety of career opportunities outside of clinical practice.

The curriculum is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the core areas of psychology. You’ll explore how the brain works, how people develop from childhood to adulthood, and how social and cultural factors influence behavior. The course places a strong emphasis on research and data analysis which are foundational skills for any career in the field.

Key subject areas often include:

  • Foundations of Psychology: An introduction to the major theories, historical context, and ethical principles of the discipline.
  • Cognitive Psychology: Studying mental processes like memory, attention, and problem-solving.
  • Biological Psychology: Understanding the biological and physiological bases of behavior, including the nervous system and genetics.
  • Developmental Psychology: Exploring human growth and change across the lifespan.
  • Social Psychology: Examining how individuals are influenced by others and their social environment.
  • Abnormal Psychology: The study of psychological disorders and mental health.
  • Research Methods and Statistics: Learning how to design and conduct psychological research and analyse data.

After completing the core units, some degrees allow you to choose elective subjects or a minor in a related field, such as counseling, neuroscience, or human resources, to tailor your studies to your interests.
