How hard is it to get a BA?

Published: Dec 31, 2025

Entry to a Bachelor of Arts is competitive but achievable. Australian universities often require an ATAR in the mid range or equivalent senior secondary results. International students need Year 12 equivalence and English proficiency such as IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 overall, depending on the university.

Some majors have higher requirements. Many universities offer pathway programs, foundation studies, or diploma routes that lead into the BA after successful completion. Credit may be granted for prior study.

Factor                                     BA Difficulty
Entry Requirements            Moderate, not as competitive as professional degrees
Academic Skills Needed     Reading, writing, research, critical thinking
Workload                                Standard undergraduate workload (3 years full-time)
Career Preparation              Requires networking, internships, or postgraduate study for some fields
Overall                                     Achievable with dedication and good study habits

International students apply for the Student Visa Subclass 500. You can work part time while you study and use the Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485 after graduation.
