Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management
A typical Bachelor of Tourism degree in Australia is a three-year full-time program. Many universities also offer the option for part-time study. The curriculum generally includes a combination of core business units and specialized tourism subjects.
- Core Business Subjects: You’ll build a strong foundation in areas such as management, marketing, finance, accounting, and business law.
- Tourism-Specific Subjects: These units delve into topics like destination management, sustainable tourism, cultural tourism, event management, visitor services, and the impact of technology on the industry.
- Practical Learning: A key feature of these programs is the emphasis on practical experience. Many degrees include mandatory work-integrated learning (WIL), internships, or professional placements, often with industry partners. Some universities also offer international study trips and field trips to popular tourist destinations.
Australian universities have specific entry requirements for international applicants, which are generally divided into academic and English language proficiency criteria.
Academic Requirements
- Minimum Age: Most universities require applicants to be a minimum of 18 years old.
- Academic Qualification: You must have completed the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 qualification. This could be your high school certificate from your home country, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or another recognized foundation studies program.
- ATAR Score: While the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is primarily for domestic students, universities will assess your international qualification to determine if it’s equivalent to the required ATAR score for the course. Minimum ATARs can range from around 60 to 75, but this is an indicative guide and can change each year.
- Prerequisite Subjects: Some courses may have specific subject prerequisites, such as a pass in a General English or Mathematics subject in your final year of high school.
English Language Requirements
- Proficiency Tests: You must demonstrate your English proficiency by taking a standardized test like the IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic. Read 2025 news on English test requirements: https://pathwaytoaus.com/general/australia-visa-pte-score-changes-take-effect-august-7-2025/
- Minimum Scores: The required scores can vary, but generally, you’ll need:
- IELTS Academic: An overall score of 6.0 to 6.5, with no band score lower than 5.5 or 6.0.
- TOEFL (iBT): An overall score of around 64 to 79, with minimum scores in each section.
- PTE Academic: An overall score of 50 to 58, with no section score lower than 42 to 50.
- Exemptions: You may be exempt from these tests if you are a citizen of, and hold a passport from, the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland. Completing a certain period of study in English may also qualify you for an exemption.
Graduates commonly move into roles such as:
-
Destination or tourism officer (DMOs), hotel & resort operations, guest relations, events coordinator, tour operations, revenue/yield management, tourism marketing & digital, MICE and visitor experience management.
Progression into supervisory/managerial roles typically comes with experience and optional postgraduate study (e.g., Master of Tourism/Marketing).
