Increased Work Rights for International students in Australia

International student in a coffee shop

It has recently been announced by the Australian Government that student visa holders in Australia that are employed in hospitality and tourism will have the restrictions on their working hours lifted under a new measure to be included in this week’s federal budget.

Australian student visa holders are usually restricted to working 40 hours per fortnight, however in response to calls from the hospitality and tourism sector these restrictions have been lifted to help fill in staffing gaps usually filled by international students in Australia.

Hospitality and tourism will now be classified as critical industries, joining other industries such as childcare, health care, agriculture, food processing and disability care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the increased work rights last?

It’s not yet clear, however this is a temporary change to working restrictions. The increased work rights for international students is in response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 lockdowns and border closures

If I’m a dependent on a student visa will my work rights be increased?

Yes, as you’re also on a student visa, so your work rights as an international student will be increased if you’re working in hospitality, tourism or another critical industry

How do I get the increased work rights on my student visa?

You don’t need to do anything, you can contact your employer

How will I know when the restrictions are changed back to normal?

Your employer will be notified when your restrictions are back to 40 hours per fortnight
