First, before you can live and work in Australia, remember that there’s a 3-step process: Sponsorship – Nomination – Application. Every applicant goes through these steps so they can submit their requirements to Immigration.

Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)

Skills-based Solutions 

The Subclass 482 is a temporary visa for skilled workers that gives employees the flexibility to change employers if and when they decide to. The occupation that you want to apply for should be in the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). 

Pathways and Employee Eligibility

Specialist Skills Pathway 

This pathway focuses on individuals with specialized skills or qualifications in high demand within specific sectors. These are usually highly skilled roles requiring advanced expertise.

  • Requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least AUD141,210
  • Priority 7-day processing 
  • Any occupation except trade workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers 
  • Stay: up to 4 years (up to 5 years for HK passport holders) 
  • Cost: AUD3,210


    Core Skills Pathway

This pathway is designed for individuals with essential skills that are critical to Australia’s labor market needs. These skills are typically in standard but highly demanded occupations. Check the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL) and see which skills can apply to your situation.

  • Requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least AUD76,515
  • 21-day processing (proposed)
  • Skills in short supply that are on the new Core Skills Occupation List
  • Stay: up to 4 years (up to 5 years for HK passport holders) 
  • Cost: AUD3,210

Essential Skills

This pathway is for individuals with skills deemed essential to Australia’s economic recovery and growth. It typically focuses on critical sectors identified by the government. Occupations for the Essential Skills Pathway are yet to come out. But it is essentially all occupations skill level 1 or 2 of the Core Skills Occupations List.

  • Requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least AUD76,515 
  • 21-day processing (proposed) 
  • Skills in short supply that are on the new Core Skills Occupation List 
  • Stay: up to 4 years (up to 5 years for HK passport holders) 
  • Cost: AUD3,210

Employer Checklist

Your employer must:

☑️Give an employment offer 

☑️Pay a minimum salary of $76,515 

☑️Give a superannuation or the minimum salary that an Australian would get in the role 

Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)


Streams: The Transitional Pathway or The Direct Entry

Temporary Residence Transition Stream 

Work for 2 years in your nominated occupation and qualify if listed on MLTSSL, STSOL, or ROL. Transition from a 482 to a 186 visa.

Work experience required 

Applicants must have worked in their nominated occupation for at least 2 years out of the last 3 years on a 482 visa.

Eligible Occupation List

Applicants can now access this pathway if their occupation is on the MLTSSL, STSOL, or ROL occupation lists

Cost: AUD4,910

Direct Entry Stream 

Apply directly for a permanent employer sponsored visa. 

CSOL Requirement 

The occupation you’re applying for must in the Core Skills Occupation List (not in the MLTSSL)

Positive Skills Assessment 

Relevant skills will be evaluated and you must pass this to qualify  

Work Experience Required

3 years of work history at the required skill level for at least 3 years full time (38 hours / week)

Training Visa (Subclass 407)

This visa sponsors applicants in occupational training activities in Australia. 

☑️Minimum of 30 hours per week 

☑️No minimum salary 

☑️A lot cheaper 

☑️After 2 years on a 407 visa, you can’t move to 186 

☑️Stay: validity within the visa period 

Benefits

☑️ Live and work as a trainee in Australia for up to 2 years (depends on the length of training)

Occupational Training 

☑️ Required for registration

Eligible occupations

Must have worked or studied full time for at least 12 months in the occupation that is on the Skilled Occupation List.

Workplace Based Training

  • Comprises at least 30 hours a week of training 
  • 70% training must be in the workplace environment

Training Plans

The training program is tailored and structured to the needs of the nominee. 

☑️ Practical work experience and periods of instruction and/or observation

☑️ Framework – objectives, tasks, and timeframes

☑️ Assessment of the nominated trainee’s current skill level

☑️ Additional or enhanced skills the applicant wants to develop

Temporary Work (Short Stay) Visa (Subclass 400) 

Unlike the visas we’ve mentioned earlier, the Subclass 400 entails a one-step process. It’s the quickest and cheapest kind of visa to apply for work. 

☑️Available to highly skilled individuals to fill non ongoing work in Australia

☑️Maximum of 6 months 

☑️Very short, non ongoing work 

☑️One-off specific work 

☑️A lot of documents required for application

☑️Can apply for a 482 visa if the employer needs it 

☑️Can bring family members but they aren’t allowed to work or study in Australia

Types of Occupation to get this visa

Under specific circumstances:

☑️ Specialty art installation work for one-off projects
