The New Skills in Demand Visa 2024

Australia is set to launch a new Skills in Demand visa in 2024, with three targeted pathways designed to attract skilled workers. These visas will likely replace the standard 482 visa. Essentially, these may be a rebranding of the current 482 visa (however, there are some significant differences).

3 pathways to include in the New Skills in Demand Visa:

  1. Specialist Skills Pathway (if you earn above $135,000)
  2. Core Skills Pathway (if you earn above $70,000)
  3. Essential Skills Pathway (if you earn below $70,000)

Specialist Skills Pathway:

  • Target: Highly skilled professionals crucial to Australia’s economic growth.
  • Requirements:
    • Guaranteed annual earnings of at least AUD 135,000 (equivalent to roughly USD 93,000) – ensuring competitiveness with local workers.
    • Open to all occupations except trades, machinery operation/driving, and manual labor.
    • Fast-tracked processing within 7 days.

Core Skills Pathway:

  • Target: Skilled workers in occupations facing critical shortages.
  • Requirements:
    • Occupation listed on the new Core Skills Occupation List, identified by Jobs and Skills Australia.
    • Minimum annual earnings meeting the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) – currently set at AUD 70,000 (around USD 48,000). Effective July 1, 2024, the TSMIT will be raised from $70,000 to $73,150.

Essential Skills Pathway (Under Development):

  • Target: Workers in essential roles earning below AUD 70,000.
  • Requirements:
    • Possessing skills deemed essential for Australia’s economy.
    • Currently sponsored through labor agreements.
  • Benefits:
    • Filling critical workforce gaps.
    • Supporting economic growth.

*Please note, These are all proposed changes and no legislation has been provided yet. At Pathway to Aus we will be sure to keep you updated. Please note that information is general in nature, please contact one of our specialist migration agents to know more about your specific situation.
