Which state is the easiest to receive State Migration?

This is a question that as a migration agent we are often asked. And to be entirely honest, this question could be specific to your situation. Different states may be easier to receive state nomination for different occupations or different circumstances. Please note, this is our opinion only and it has changed over time. If we had to currently pick one state that in general is the easiest to receive state nomination, it would be South Australia. In fact, we have noticed many applicants, particularly from Western Australia or Victoria, have moved to South Australia to apply for state nomination.

What is a State Nomination?

State Nomination is required to apply for Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) and Skilled Regional (Subclass 491). Each state has a different set of occupations and a different list of requirements. In order to be invited for state nomination, you must meet these requirements.

Why choose South Australia?

Firstly – The Occupation List:

South Australia has A LOT of occupations that are listed on the state migration list. It would have to be one of the states that invite the most number of occupations.

Secondly, a higher chance of invitation:

South Australia has a large quota of invitations to hand out and South Australia receives much fewer applications, compared to most other states. Therefore, if you meet the state nomination requirements, there is a very reasonable chance you will receive an invitation.

Net Migration Loss:

South Australia is one of the only states in Australia to suffer a net migration loss of Australian citizens and permanent residents. This means that more Australians leave this state than move there. South Australia still wants the population to grow, so this net loss is often countered by an increase of migrating internationals.

Finally, the requirements are simple and relatively easy to meet:

Each state has not only a list of eligible occupations but also a list of requirements that you must meet. These requirements can change depending on the occupation and there are numerous different streams. However, common requirements if you are living in Adelaide, are that:

  • You have lived and worked in your nominated occupation for 6 months for 491
  • You have lived and worked in your nominated occupation for 12 months for 190

Please note, there are often other smaller requirements and this information is very general in nature. However, in my experience, if you are working at least 40 hours per fortnight in your occupation, there is a very reasonable chance of receiving an invite.
