What is the Skills in Demand Visa?

Published: Jul 26, 2024

The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482) is Australia’s primary temporary employer-sponsored visa program. It is designed to address nationwide labour shortages by connecting verified employers with skilled overseas workers.

This framework permanently replaced the old Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa system, introducing modern benefits such as:

  • Faster Processing: Streamlined processing pathways for high-demand occupations.

  • Lower Barriers to Entry: A reduced requirement of just 1 year of relevant work experience (down from 2 years under the old system).

  • Increased Job Flexibility: Visa holders have more time and freedom to switch sponsors if needed.

  • Clear PR Pathways: A guaranteed, direct pathway to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) after 2 years.
