Automotive electricians install, maintain and repair electrical wiring and electronic components in motor vehicles. Day to day, this involves using test equipment to locate electrical and electronic faults, then dismantling and removing the affected assemblies or components.
They install electrical equipment and connect power-operated accessories to a vehicle’s power supply, adjust engine control systems and timing, and test and replace defective alternators, generators, voltage regulators and starter motors. The role also covers repairing and replacing faulty ignition and wiring, along with swapping out worn parts such as fuses, lamps and switches.
