RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning

What is Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognised Prior Learning is about having your previous work experience and skills assessed so that you can obtain a qualification. You gain the qualification based on the skills you learn on the work site, not in a class room.

It makes obtaining your qualification faster and cheaper. It will often be cheaper than completing a full qualification, because you’re not paying to learn things you are already know.

Example of RPL

if you have worked as an automotive mechanic for several years you may already have many of the skills and knowledge that you would learn if you studied the course in Australia. So through RPL, you can turn the skills and knowledge you have gained through on-the-job experience into an Australian recognized qualification.

Australian qualification through RPL

Here are some reasons why you may need an Australian qualification through RPL

Your Australian Employer

Your Australian employer may not recognize or accept your overseas qualification or experience, so through RPL or credit transfer it could allow you to obtain an Australian recognized qualification.

Migration Purposes

RPL is very useful for those who have the experience, knowledge and skills required to work in a profession, but no official educational qualification. You may require a Diploma or Certificate in order to obtain a visa or pass a skills assessment.

Obtaining licensing

To obtain a license to work in a profession, you may be required to obtain an Australian recognized qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

In case you don’t find an answer to your question, feel free to consult with one of our agents.

How much does it cost?

Recognised prior learning does come at a cost. The cost varies depending on a lot of factors including

  • Where you do the assessment
  • What qualification you are looking to obtain
  • How much work goes into each assessment
  • Your previous work experience
What do I need to provide for RPL?

In order to obtain RPL or a credit transfer you may be required to provide:

  • Academic transcript for previous study
  • Your academic certificate or degree
  • Certificates for short courses taken relating to the field
  • A course overview for the courses previously taken
  • Reference letters from previous employers
  • A detailed copy of your resume
  • Payslips from previous employment
How is RPL different from a credit transfer?

RPL allows those who have the previous work experience in a profession to obtain an Australian recognized qualification.

However a credit transfer only allows you to use your previous education at another education provider to receive credit towards another course.

Before you begin a course, you should check with your training provider if you can receive any credit transfer for your previous studies or PRL for your previous work experience

Who can assess your previous work experience?

Registered Training Organisations in Australia are required to provide Recognised Prior Learning services.
