Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers from the Pathway to Aus team to the most common questions

Do I need to leave Australia to apply for a Student Visa?

No. You can apply for a Student Visa while still in Australia on your Work Holiday Visa. This is an “onshore application” and you can stay in Australia while it’s processed. You don’t need to leave and come back.

Can I apply for a Student Visa while my WHV is still valid?

Yes. It’s recommended to apply at least 2-3 months before your WHV expires for a smooth transition. If your WHV expires while your Student Visa is being processed, you’ll automatically get a bridging visa that lets you stay legally in Australia.

What happens if my WHV expires while waiting for my Student Visa?

You’ll automatically receive a bridging visa (BVA) that lets you stay in Australia legally while your Student Visa application is being processed. You can continue working under the same conditions as your WHV until your Student Visa is granted.

Can I work while waiting for my Student Visa to be approved?

Yes. If you apply onshore and your WHV expires, your bridging visa will let you work with the same conditions as your WHV until your Student Visa is granted. Once your Student Visa is approved, you can work 48 hours per fortnight during term time.
