Is a postgraduate diploma enough?

Published: Dec 18, 2025

A postgraduate diploma is enough for targeted upskilling and some professional roles, but it is not a master’s. It is AQF Level 8 and valued for career advancement or transition. It generally does not qualify you for the post-study work stream of the 485 visa unless you complete an eligible degree. For many jobs and career paths, yes — especially if you want in-depth skills or a career switch without a full master’s. But for some academic or research careers, a master’s or PhD may be preferred.

Use a postgraduate diploma to build specialised capability, meet prerequisite knowledge, or step toward a master’s with credit. In regulated professions, check whether the diploma meets accreditation or licensing standards, as many require a degree.

If post-study work rights are important, plan to continue into a master’s. Learn how qualification level affects 485 visa eligibility.
