What is the difference between a graduate diploma and a postgraduate diploma?

Published: Dec 18, 2025

In Australia, a graduate diploma and a postgraduate diploma are effectively the same. Both are AQF Level 8, require a prior bachelor or equivalent experience, and usually take one year full time. The naming varies by university, but the level, recognition, and typical outcomes are equivalent. They usually refer to the same AQF Level 8 qualification. In other countries, differences may exist.

Course content and entry criteria may differ by provider, not by the title. Both qualifications can articulate into related master’s degrees with credit. Ensure the program is TEQSA-accredited and CRICOS-registered if you are an international student.

You will normally study on a Student visa subclass 500. For post-study work rights, check 485 visa eligibility, as only degrees count for the post-study work stream. Understand who qualifies for the 485 Temporary Graduate visa.
