Navigating the 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream to Become a Permanent Resident

If you have already worked a minimum of 2 years and thinking about getting a permanent visa? Read on as this article will discuss how to transition from Temporary Employer Sponsored Visa (subclass 482) to Permanent Residency through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream. This pathway offers a significant opportunity for temporary visa holders to secure your future in Australia.

Please note, if you have an occupation on the MLTSSL, you may be able to apply for for the Permanent 186 – Direct Entry Stream. This is available to limited occupations only.

Understanding 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream:

To be eligible for the 186 (Permanent Employer Sponsored) visa, you must have worked for the same employer full time at the required skill level for at least two(2) years on your 482 Visa. The employer must sponsor you and meet specific nomination criteria. As always, you must have competent English or come from an English native country. Do note that two (2) years does not count if you are on an unpaid leave or waiting for the visa to be approved.

The 482 Visa allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia for an approved business for up to four years. This visa serves as a stepping stone towards permanent residency for many.

Application Process:

There’s only 2 steps for this visa and the company does not need to lodge a standard business sponsorship.

1st: Nomination by Employer: Your employer must first nominate the you for the permanent visa. Your employer must show the full-time employment agreement for at least 2 years and paying you the Australian market salary of 73,150 AUD per year. 2nd Visa Application: After the nomination is approved, you can submit your application for the 186 visa providing the evidence of working full time for 2 years as the holder of the 482 visa. Of course, include all other documents such as police checks etc.

Benefits of the 186 Visa:

The 186 visa grants permanent residency, allowing holders to:

✔ live and work anywhere in Australia

✔ have access to Medicare

✔ the visa offers the opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship in the future

Conclusion

The 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream is an excellent option for those looking to make Australia their permanent home, leveraging the experience gained on their 482 Visa.
