The Skills Assessment is a requirement for most general skilled migration (subclass 189 or 190 visas). These are widely regarded as the most appealing visas available to Australia. As they are permanent visas that allow you to remain in Australia indefinitely and have unlimited work restrictions. To be able to apply for these visas, you must first pass a points test. The points test measures how desirable you are to the Australian Government. You will receive points for such things as:


Age


  • 18 – 24 = 25 points
  • 25 – 32 = 30 points
  • 33 – 39 = 25 points
  • 40 – 44 = 15 points
  • 45 – 49 = 0 points

English Language Ability


  • Competent English (IELTS 6 or hold and NZ/UK/Irish/Canadian or US passport) = 0 points
  • Proficient English (IELTS 7) = 10 points
  • Superior English (IELTS 8)   = 20 points

Skilled Work Experience Outside Australia in the last 10 years


  • 3 – 5 years = 5 points
  • 5 – 8 years = 10 points
  • 8 – 10 years = 15 points

Skilled Work Experience in Australia


  • 1 – 3 years = 5 points
  • 3 – 5 years = 10 points
  • 5 – 8 years = 15 points
  • 8 – 10 years = 20 points

Educational Qualifications (From an Australian Recognised educational institution)


  • Doctorate = 20 points
  • Bachelor/Masters Degree = 15 points
  • Diploma or trade qualification completed in Australia = 10 points

Australian Study Qualification


  • 5 points if you studied a degree or diploma in Australia

Skilled Partner Qualification (Does your partner pass the skills assessment)


  • 5 points

Completed Professional Year


  • 5 points

Community Language Qualification


  • 5 points

Study in Regional Australia


  • 5 points

Nomination by State or Territory Government


  • Visa Subclass 190 = 5 points
